Last yr a lot of kids from our district accepted their Wisco acceptance, however, this yr the kids who were accepted were never going to go it was their “safety” and the ones who would have accepted in a heartbeat were deferred. Most have moved on to equally good schools.
My son said those that were accepted to UW-Madison at his school were looking to go to Ivy’s or elsewhere, and UW-Madison, Purdue, UIUC, etc were their safeties… My son’s committed elsewhere, and not sure what he’ll decide if he’s lucky enough to be accepted off the waitlist, but I have a feeling that if it’s not in the next week, maybe two, he’s going to move forward with the other choice, even if he’s offered after…
Are you in state or OOS? Because if you’re in state I’d love to know what district!
That’s really interesting. Since UW-Madison started accepting the Common App for Fall 2017, their OOS applications have skyrocketed, but their OOS yield has dropped. This and @Issaquah_Coug98’s post really provide evidence on why this might be happening.
It gives me a little more hope that my son might still get into his top choice.
We are in So Cal, originally from the Midwest.
We also know at least 4 kids locally who were admitted to Wisconsin, but are not attending. Only know of 1 other locally that’s on the waitlist who also wants to attend. Does this mean anything for us, no idea. But hoping so!
We are OOS and many kids from S24’s school do apply to UW-Madison, UIUC, UMICH, UMD, UW-Seattle, Purdue. Kids typically choose 3 from the above list and and apply in addition to the UC’s and other privates.
My Son was accepted to UW-Madison and loved the campus and it was in his top 3 choices. In the end he choose another college over UW-Madison mainly because of the weather. I know some kids from his school are going UW-Madison but only 10% of the kids accepted.
Good luck to all of you waiting on the waitlist.
As someone who has done a little counseling for college admissions in the midwest, yield has always been low for OOS students at UW Madison (and public flagships in the midwest in general, probably most public flagships, I just follow the midwest closely). Just now they are getting more and more OOS apps and are having to adjust for that. This is why I recommend student plan on sitting a bit with that “Why UW” essay if they are really interested in attending. Because I do think they are trying to compute something that indicates LTE - likelihood to enroll in their admissions office and use it (as many schools do). That doesn’t mean I think you need to indicate it’s your #1 choice, an “average” LTE is fine. I suspect a lot of toss off OOS apps are easy to peel out in the admissions office. I really don’t think it is really a safety for OOS students anymore. Way too many disappointed students every spring at a range of stat levels.
Their yield average is about 30%. But I’m sure it’s higher in state and considerably less out of state. And may vary somewhat by program too. So knowing a handfull of students who were accepted and none attending wouldn’t be weird with those stats. I’m sure the late financial offers with the FAFSA fiasco will throw things off for many schools too. Such a weird year.
Really crossing fingers on waiting list movement for those still hanging in there hoping! My kid never expected to land at UW Madison but I can’t say enough good things about it now. I certainly don’t blame people for moving on. My kid picked UW Madison while sitting on a waitlist.
I think my patience has completely ran out. So I decided to consult with the Magic 8 Ball from the kids toy bin. I asked it if Madison will release waitlist decisions tonight? And the answer was… Without A Doubt!! Wouldn’t it be lovely if that was true? Madison pretty please throw us a breadcrumb soon! Anything!
So if my math is mathing correctly, 4,436 of the 7,966 admitted (~55.7%) last year, were from the waitlist?
4436 students were eventually offered spots off of the waitlist in 2023. We don’t know how many of them actually enrolled.
You’re correct, it’s total enrolled vs. # admitted, not enrolled, off the waitlist… So yes, they don’t confirm how many were enrolled off the waitlist. My math, was not mathing…
So we are thinking 7;00 EST
If they release today it’ll probably be around then.
S24 was just accepted by Wisconsin!!!
OOS Mechanical Engineering.
He received an email and text message and an update to the portal. He has until May 24th to decide, but he’s going to accept it tonight.
Congrats!
Congratulations!!!
Honestly I’m SOOOOO HAPPY FOR YOU & YOUR SON!!! That’s wonderful news!!! Congratulations!!!
Congrats
Me tooooo!!! Amazing!!! Is he thrilled???
Congratulations to you and your son! Your effort in contacting the admission office, doing analysis based on available data all over the place, and keeping everyone here as informed as possible over the past couple of months has been amazing! Your son is lucky to have such a supportive parent! And UW–Madison seems to have felt it
Whether your son decides to “turn around the car, dad” and head to Madison, it’s been great to see your informative posts here and I believe other posters feel the same way. Congrats again!
