Virginia Tech Early Action for Fall 2025 Admission

Does anyone have an idea of how many kids are in one waitlist batch?

How many batches has there been so far?

I’m not sure but people found out 3/28 and also last week I think

I suspect a lot of schools are being generous since there was a huge increase in applicants because most schools are now using the common app. I also think the economy is having a factor and many are choosing to stay instate.

It is very possible there will be few or even no in state movement on the waitlist. There have been years when it was zero. Considering there have been none yet in state, but lots of oos, does not bode well for in state waitlist. In the current economic uncertainty it’s easy to imagine in state yield higher than expected and out of state lower because parents are less certain and don’t want to pay oos tuitions.

Maybe after or right before the commitment date, they will have an oversight of in-state waitlists. I’ve also heard a lot of OOS students are declining their offers, so maybe that is a good sign for us (not news at all though since VT is known for giving little financial aid).

OOS students that decline offers will be replaced by other OOS students from the waitlist.

Has OOS students always been the ones to be pulled off the waitlist in other years?

No i know ppl in state who have gotten off of the waitlist before

Ive seen a bunch of OOS people declining the waitlist offer of admission because its expensive and they usually dont offer a lot of financial aid. They have already sent out 4 waves of OOS offers from the waitlist, which means a lot are saying no. There is no rule saying there must be ⅓ of students OOS, but there must be AT LEAST ⅔ in state. So if they are really struggling with OOS people and bringing them in, they might just let in more in-state people.

I thought it’s only been 2 waves so far?

March 28, April 19, people heard back this Sunday, and Im pretty sure there was a 4th time but maybe i am wrong

S25 (OOS) declined biomed engineering today - he was accepted off WL 3/28. We really liked the school and strongly considered, but he decided he wanted to stay in-state (CA) and committed (in spirit anyway) today. Good luck to those waiting, especially those hoping to stay in state!

The percentage of in-state students has been going down every year

24-25: 65.1%
23-24: 66.4%
22-23: 67.9%
21-22: 69.2%
20-21: 71.4%
19-20: 70.5%
18-19: 71%
17-18: 71.1%
16-17: 72.5%

That’s unfortunate, while VA in-state students are at a disadvantage applying to other state schools which have a high number reserved for their in-state students, we seem to losing out on our in-state advantages as well.

I really hope this Wednesday, tomorrow (the LAST day before commitment day), in-state people will hear back!

Me too…

I don’t think VT is an anomaly. My S25 did not get into our state school for Engineering but got in EA to VT. Inversely, we have heard of lots of OOS kids getting into our state school for engineering that have similar or slightly lower stats. Schools want the higher tuition from these students but still abide by the percentage of in state students required.

I was referring to the stats posted above where there is a progressive decrease in the # of in-state headcount over the past decade. My D25 is WL’d at VTech but has gotten into colleges like Purdue and UF for engineering.

UF for example, takes in over 85% in-state and seem to be doing right by their state students. Also the next interesting thing I noticed is that COA as a OOS for UF and Purdue is in the same range as in-state VTech and MUCH lesser than UVA. And UF is no slouch its right below UVA in public college rankings. And neither is Purdue for Engineering.

So they (VTech and UVA) are expensive in-state compared to some of their peers and they are STILL admitting more OOS to attract higher revenue.

off topic but thats insane that your kiddo got into UF and Purdue engineering OOS but not VT in state. My S25 was offered a different major at in state CU Boulder even though he applied Engineering. He was denied at UF.
