While We Were Sleeping - Upgrade

@doughill The least important thing on each post is whether someone edited his post, and at what time it was edited. That hardly ever matters to anyone. Almost every single thing I post ends up edited because I see a typo after I’ve posted it. Nobody cares.

And yet, the first thing I now see on every post is the bright red post edited by X at x:00*.

Why? It seems to indicate that CC considers our edits to be more important than our names.

@doughill- Just want to say that I appreciate your work and most of us will adjust and come around. It isn’t easy changing a large site like this, and I’m sure adjustments will be made. Thanks.

eastcoastcrazy- I think you are in a definite minority. Most users stay logged in and will not have the problem you are reporting. I don’t understand why you only log in if you want to post. That is not the norm for using a member-forum.

Agreed. ^^^^ Staying logged in is a simple “fix” unless there is some reason prohibiting you from doing that. I always come on armed and ready to comment. A little give, a little take friends!

MOWC, I never log into member-forums that I can read without doing so, unless I want to reply.

There is too much white space and too much scrolling involved. I used to be able to see multiple posts at once, now I can maybe two. And I guess all the white space at the sides is ads that are blocked by my ad blocker?

I’m on vacation and simply don’t have time to read all these comments, so please forgive me if I repeat things. My first clue that things changed here was when my email inbox was inundated with CC mail. My original option to not getting any mail was overridden by this change. It took me forever to log back in (didn’t remember either my password or which email account I used) and when I finally did … Not at all happy with what I see. I am logged off the site now automatically after inactivity, which is a pain. Miss the classic look. I had a preference setting which had 40 messages to a page, and that’s gone. I think I changed the email thing, but not sure. Don’t like the emphasis on when the post was edited. I think there are more things I don’t like that I’m sure others have said, and I don’t have time now to explore the site to see what I like, but my initial impression is not good. I want my gray background back!!

I could do without the row of flag/like/helpful/facebook tags, if it tightened up the thread.

I am complaining of the same thing eastcoastcrazy is because I do most of my browsing on public computers or at work where my log in isn’t saved. I don’t reply to most of the threads I read, half the time I open the page, look at the list of threads, see there’s nothing interesting, and close it again without even reading anything. Even if I just do that, I’d have to open the page, find the parent cafe, read the thread list, then log in, then find the parent cafe again, then find the thread I wanted to read to maybe post a comment on and maybe not. No thanks.

I too am normally logged out until I want to post.

The discussion boards I am an admin for have plenty of folks who view without staying logged in. They show up as “guests.”

Lots of reasons for it. People viewing on a work or other computer, mainly being the major reason.

@LasMa, I increased the font size on CC, and it doesn’t impact any other webpage that I view. Also, when I return to CC, it opens in the increased font size. I find the white less blinding with the increased font size, thought it’s still too much white.

Sorry if this was addressed already, but can we go back to being able to see when the last post in a given section was? I frequent the pre-med section which has about 8 subsections and I like that before the upgrade I could see without clicking on one of the subsections if there had been a new post in it. Now I can’t do that. Same thing with Brown within the Ivy League section. No need to go there if there’s no new posts.

doughill, I tried to report a clearly spamming post, clicked on "flag: then “report” and got the following: “DiscussionID is not a valid integer.”

Add me to the folks who’d like a larger font for poster’s name, member since XXX, location & page numbers. Have I also like having the time on posts marked “yesterday” but don’t know how hard that would be to return.

Also noticed that the emoticon icon on the upper right corner of the text box (as in what I’m typing in right now) covers part of my text. It disappears once the message is posted, but covers the last three letters on the first line I type in a post.

Many thanks!

In the past, somewhere I read that the “edited by” tag occurred not just after x minutes, but if another poster had read your post before you edited-- ie, it flagged to the other reader that there had been a change. And we just figured whether is was an essential change or correcting a typo.

The new red line seems to come up even if you do not make a change, just hit the edit button, then decide not to alter anything.

Using the red for the edit statement is overkill. Edits are generally trite typos that have been corrected. I’m guessing the team will change that color and use the red for something important like the poster’s name which would make those pop so much more if not, they should.

Yes, the spacing on the emoticon button in the top right of the text box needs to be re-positioned. It interferes with the post. I keep thinking I have a typo, try to correct it and the emoticon window pops open. That should be a quick fix.

Anyone know where the turning on/off of pm messaging might be?

^^ No, I do not have an ad blocker and I see both ads and wasted space at the same time!

It appears that the “Latest Posts” shows ten pages of posts, oldest first. It should probably show the newest first.

The massive amounts of white space on the sides are not due to ads, but are because the forum once again is using a fixed-width layout. If you resize your browser wider and narrower, you will see that the text does not change the amount of screen space used, you just wind up with more or less white space on the sides.

For those of us who have large monitors and use browser windows more than 800 pixels wide or so, it’s a huge waste of space. This is one of the things the old “CC Classic” mode addressed.

Hopefully they will change this, or give us the option to change it.

From the posts on this thread, and from personal observation…it seems that this new format clearly discourages ‘discussions’. Post #'s are gone, I can’t figure out how to find previous post made by posters (to use as reference), all the white space makes it harder to scroll back and forth between entries. The structure is more conducive to commenting on a news article than it is to ‘discussing’ a subject. I will leave it up to the long time CC participants to decide whether this is a targeted effort or on of those unintentional consequences.

dietz199, I agree. I really feel like this “upgrade” has ruined this site. Not trying to be negative, and am not usually the type that can’t adjust to change. The whole site just feels different and not in a good way. I agree with the previous poster who brought up the whole “Turfmonster” soccer forum disaster.

I miss the red stars which indicate threads to which you’ve posted. I miss the ease of going to the first new post-I see no way to do this on my phone. I HATE the facebook option. WTH is that about on a forum which has “Confidential” as part of its name?! Don’t like all the white space. That smiley icon is annoying as you are trying to type. And REALLY, really want post #s and time posted on each post. How are we supposed to refer to past posts without them?
