While We Were Sleeping - Upgrade

I don’t really care that we don’t pay to use the site. Just because it’s a free site doesn’t mean we don’t get to have our own opinions. We provide the traffic which does pay the people who run the site. I hardly use this site to talk about college anymore, I can just as easily take my traffic elsewere and give my probably 1,000 page loads a day to somebody else if all I am looking for is a discussion board. I would like to stay here, so I find it pretty aggravating that that is being made difficult or impossible for me. A site I have really enjoyed for years has just gone pretty much down the tubes, it is not remotely user friendly-- not because it is hard to re-learn a new forum but because it just doesn’t work the way a forum is supposed to. Telling me to use “remember me” on a public computer instead of saying you’re going to fix a major log in problem is just ludicrous. I am not going to learn work-arounds to your bugs instead of expecting you to fix them. If I did this on my site I would probably lose most of my member base and I would deserve it.

And the anger that you’re hearing isnt because I’m mad you wanted to make changes, I am sure you didn’t make any of these bugs or poorly functioning features on purpose and I am sure some changes must have been necessary. The anger is coming from telling me the reception has been fantastic and that everything is going smoothly and you’re really happy with it. Do you think we’re stupid? Telling us how awesome we are and buttering us up isn’t going to make us forget we have to navigate through the forum two or three times just to get logged in properly to post and your solution is to use “remember me,” or that a lot of our friends are now gone because they couldn’t stand this layout or non-layout. I understand you need to try and keep things upbeat in the face of the mob here but taking that too far is just disrespectful of all the people who are sincerely upset and hoping this is going to get a lot better. My sense is that it’s only going to get a little bit better, because you’re not really listening. You might be hearing a few things but you’re not hearing how disappointed we all are, not if the reception has been “fantastic.”

@Emaheevul07 We are working on a solution for the login not keeping your current page issue. While I can’t provide a timeline, I do expect the issue to be resolved in the future. Thank you for the continued feedback.

I am still getting an email for every post in this thread (and others).

And they still have the username in the subject so gmail can’t group them.

+1 to ema

I got an email the first hour or so, but then I did something to stop the emails. Now, I only get an email when someone does the @ and then my screen name in their post, which is fine with me.

Click on “Notifications” in the upper right, next to your screen name, and you can turn off email notifications. “Notifications” is the first little button next to your screen name; once you’re in that, click on “Notification Preferences,” and you can click on what you want to receive an email for.

CTTC, I’ve been following the college life forum and have seen a significant drop off of regulars. Haven’t been to hsl but they’re a constantly changing group. Very few like me and nyquii for example make the transition from posting in hsl to posting in other parts of the site long term. If they’re going after the hsl base, they’re going after the rapid turnover population. So much for community.

I’m not getting email notifications either.

Maybe I’ve missed it, but it seems pretty unanimous that everyone hates the white background, but I don’t recall any of the admins. acknowledging that or telling us they will try to change it. My apologies if they have.

eastcoastcrazy and Eemaheevu- Get a grip. It’s a rough roll-out and they are working on it. You weren’t lied to, Eema. It isn’t ABOUT you, believe it or not. It’s a message forum. Yes, it’s important to many of us and has provided really neat socialization and information over a number of years. I’m an old-timer myself. If it’s so awful right now, please just leave. Emaheevu- I think you are out of line. Romani, too. Maybe go start a new site for “don’t really belong in the parents’ forum anyway” folks.

That’s a bit harsh, MOWC.

Sorry, MOWC, I forgot we were only allowed to post positive feedback.
You can think I’m out of line all you want. I really don’t care

Yes, I know I can turn them off.

I want them, however. I just don’t want them uselessly polluting my inbox. Take the username out of the subject and all will be well. :)

@MomofWildChild, excuse me? What did I post that would indicate that I need to get a grip?

I stand by my statement that it isn’t appropriate for CC administrators to suggest that I use "remember me"as a work around for problems of navigation. I think it is reasonable for me to point out why I do not, and never will use “remember me” and do not and never will remain permanently logged into this site. It is fine that other members do those things. I do not choose to do them.

My assumption is that, since CC administrators are responding to posts on this thread they are interested in our experiences in using the site. We all want a smoothly functioning CC. Anything I am posting is in response to either things that I see going well, or things that I personally am finding frustrating.

Or was there something else that I am saying that is annoying you?

I don’t believe Romani and I are the only ones complaining, in fact I don’t think we have said anything that hasn’t already been said by plenty of people.

Can anyone link to any posts/threads where they are seeing positive feedback about the new rollout? I dont mean that to be snarky- I just simply have not seen any. That said, its been difficult to navigate the forum, especially with the absence of post #s and the time/date stamp disappearing after a while, so havent spent much time perusing.

And in the list of new posts, it would help to know what thread they are posted in (ues I realize this has been mentioned). And someone said the report function was working, but I just tested it and couldnt get it to work.

** ETA I just retried and this time it worked. First time I got an error message.

I guess I need to call the moderators out by name to get their attention

@dbraud, it was mentioned that these upgrades were necessary. Could we find out why? I honestly can’t see any reason they were necessary and certainly no reason why they all had to be rolled out at once. I don’t work in tech, I don’t necessarily understand these things. What I do understand though is that this site appeared to be unparalleled and sure, I saw the occasional “I wish I could like posts” post, but never anyone threatening to leave or cut back like I’m seeing in response to this change. Maybe we could get behind the changes if we had some knowledge as to why they were made. I’m certainly hoping that things look different from your end than ours because from here this looks like a disaster and I want to give you guys the benefit of the doubt that there was a good reason for the changes but I’m currently not seeing one.

Please…I think there is some confusion between moderators and paid administrators. Dbraud is an administrator. So is Doughill. Neither moderates this forum. But it sounds like both are on the “fixing” end of things.

And I appreciate that they are trying to communicate their progress to the members.

You can post suggestions and helpful criticism without acting like your first born has been kidnapped. There are many, many reasons why the site had to change which I’m sure the tech people could explain. These have to do with the server, overall stability of the site and the huge growth in the site traffic.
Again, it has been a rough rollout and I expect many corrections will be made.

Eastcoastcrazy- yes, when someone “resents” a suggestion on how to use the sight with more ease, I think it is a little over the top.

@jym626 - While there are things I don’t like about the changes here are a few I do.
It saves as I type my replies.
My pm’s now keep a history of my back and forth messages between my friends.which is helpful because I can’t always remember everything I send.
It tells me how many new posts there are on threads I have read.
When I click on the thread name it goes to the 1st new post.
I like seeing everyone’s dogs.
I like being able to pick of these while editing. :o3

Not a fan of the changes. Don’t like the white background, don’t like the spacing and the fonts, had to click through numerous screens just to log in and post on this thread. I’ve tried to work with it for a few days before I complained but everything feels disjointed and “cold” for lack of a better word.

One nice thing about CC and the reason I keep coming back is the lack of posters calling other posters out and demeaning their posts.
