Add me to the list of really old-timers who is not fond of what CC now looks like. I’m really unhappy with the white background and lack of post numbers. I’ve been here since '04, my youngest is a senior in college, but I’ve stayed for the company and to try to help others when I can. Honestly, since the new rollout, I’ve been “here” much less than normal. I’m not sure if I have the patience anymore to deal with all the changes. I sincerely hope that one day I will sign on and find at least the option for another background color and many other suggestions taken up.

I looked at one of my PM chains that occurred just before the conversion, and it seems that since I had deleted some of the Pms in that chat due to space constraints, those didnt return, so I only see half of the conversation.

I agree that we old dogs (no pun intended) will learn the new tricks (there are many of use here who remember the 2004 conversion from the original forum to the one we have come to know and love) there are some user friendly things I hope return. I loved getting the content of a post in the autonotification email. Now we just get an email. I hope they will reconsider this. I also liked seeing how many posts posters had in any one thread. Fun metric.

This reminds me of the reaction when they closed the political forum without notice. People reacted strongly because they were caught off guard. Perhaps that is true here too. But if there was a sticky thread with a drivers manual for the new forum, kinda like the sticky for the cc abbreviations, that would be helpful.

In the meantime, I agree that suggestions and constructive criticism are more likely to be heard than complaining.

I don’t blame the mods for a second. I know they’re adjusting to the changes along with us. The mods aren’t the ones that need to answer these questions- they don’t have the answers.

@jym626, various people have said they like the avatars, the longer edit time, the fact that drafts are saved and that they liked the “like” and “helpful” buttons. I also like knowing how many new posts are in a thread I’ve visited and that I automatically get jumped to the point in the thread where I left off. (This only works once you’ve visited a thread in the new format, but I don’t consider that a bug - it will be irrelevant soon.)

Well it seems to be a little glitchy again, so maybe they are working on it. I got a message that there was a new post to this thread from someone, but I dont seem to see it anywhere. Then I thried clicking on the “2 new” little notification message globe looking symbol next to my sn at the top right like I’ve been doing all along, and it said “permission problem” - I didnt have permission to do that. Huh?

**typos corrected

I like the avatars.

Put me down as one who would be happy without the avatars. Would prefer to just be able to read the poster’s name. Maybe the younger population, who it is likely the targeted audience for this site, likes the avatars. Personally, not so much.

Also like the longer edit time, and that it tell you how much time you have left, but dont like the big red ntification. Is there a way to delete a post after it is posted?

I agree with most of the issues others are posting, especially the background/colorations issues. Personally I don’t like the longer edit window. There have already been some cases where someone on the finaid forum posts something incorrect, another poster corrects them and the original poster goes back and edits out the mistake. I presume this is why the edit window was shorter with the old system.

Also, don’t like the emoticon drop down button hiding text in the reply box.

Speaking of emoticons, I’ve seen a number of posts indicating people were including emoticons, yet I have not seen any emoticons posted so far since the change. How did I get so lucky? I haven’t done anything on purpose to not have them shown.

deleted

So I wrote a sentence, posted, and then erased all text in edit mode. It told me I needed a “body” so I wrote “delete”. I suppose you can just put an x or something for now.

Can you delete the notifications you see on your profile? I would like to do that too.

I know of a couple of people who say they still can’t get back on CC. I couldn’t get on for several days because my old password didn’t work and I wasn’t getting sent the new password I requested. After all the people who want to get back on actually do, then we can see if the volume of posts is really any different.

Dear CC - would it be possible to temporarily (and immediately) give us a non white background color…if for no other reason that just to keep us from leaving?

Hello everyone,
While I’m not privy to all of the reasons for the changes to the forums, I can address a couple. It’s my understanding that the previous technology that CC was based on was held together by string and duct tape. It was an unstable, bloated and dated technology and was no longer supported by the larger software community. It didn’t allow for scalability, which means the growing number (700,000+) of registered users were causing it to split at the seams. Remember all of those “server busy” messages we used to get? That was a symptom of the problems with the underlying technology. In addition, the previous technology was a target of hackers and had issues with security, and the moderating tools were lacking in some areas.

The decision to upgrade was made carefully, it involved a survey of CC users last year, and it included extensive research into various platforms. In addition, the moderators were given access to the beta site in December and we spent quite a bit of time testing it out and making suggestions. One example is the password authentication. You all would not have been happy with how it was originally defined. The mods prevailed on the developers to simplify the rules for passwords. In addition, there are moderation features that were not available to us under the old platform that will make our lives easier in the future.
There are still bugs, and there are still navigation and user interface issues. It’s not perfect. But please know that the mods are very involved in reporting bugs and making suggestions for improvements. We have a long thread that is very active in which we discuss many of the same problems that you are discussing on this thread here in the Parent Cafe. The list of issues that the developers are addressing is quite long, and I know they’ve worked late nights, weekends and even overnight to make improvements to the site.
Like any new software, it will take some time to get used to. In the meantime, I hope you can all bear with us while we make improvements.

I care more that people not get harmed in the process than I do about the work getting done in a hurry. For the meanwhile, put on your Ray-Bans and enjoy a cup of joe, tea, what have you. Some things are going to take a little time.

When I go through the posts on this thread, it appears that the majority of the comments are from parents rather than from students- maybe I’m wrong. I guess maybe those of us who have been around for a while are not as good with change- I am not a fan of the changes so can be included in that group!

Also- maybe this has been addressed recently and I missed it- is everyone else still having problems with the mobile CC? I still can’t get to it in any way. Since that is the way I normally access CC, I am not using it much these days.

Commenting on the thread: we’re seeing some typical history patterns. First, folks are confused. As the conversation grows, (we get tips from others and see some bold enough to gripe publicly,) we then add our own opinions, wishes or complaints. When we don’t get our own satisfaction (wishes fulfilled or acknowledgement,) we’re emboldened to gripe more. At some point in history, then some take offense at the gripers. Then others jump in to gripe about the people griping about the gripers. Pretty soon, all H breaks out. Haven’t seen cobrat in a while. Maybe he’ll confirm.

Are my eyes deceiving me or my old mind failing me… has the vignette at the top of each post changed from blue to gray extending down to soften the white???

I mean, this is the parents cafe. I don’t think too many students are around here besides myself and Niquii.

Yes.

Apologies if this has been covered, but I’m not finding a ‘log out’ button. Seems to leave me constantly logged in. Any ideas?
