I also see some gray shading below each post separation.

Yes, and also the white background is a bit grayer as abasket mentioned.

I have noticed some quick improvements from the original change to the site so to me it does seem that the administrators are working to address the “real bugs” instead of simple “personal preference” issues. Yes the site looks a little different, but its too soon for me to tell if it has improved or not.

The one thing I do wish would be added back is the reply number. The number of replies is still showing as a total on the page so to me it would be preferable to see the numbered posts within each thread page.

I also don’t think 661 replies on a thread dedicated to CC layout complaints out of (700k plus registered users) is a sign of a mass CC exodus no matter how vocal and melodramatic some of the replies get…

Yes, instead of getting rid of the white space they have now filled part of it with a gradient. 8-|
I took a screen shot and pulled it into an editor. The background I am seeing, other than the gradients, is still pure white.

I would first like to say that I love having Romani, emaheevul, and Niquii on the board. While it is the Parent’s Cafe and I wouldn’t want it overrun with students, I love getting the young perspective they bring to the board.

Same here! I don’t get why I’m getting all these notifications regarding admins and mods addressing privacy concerns, etc., but when I click on them it says I don’t have permission to see that page. WTH?!

I read a lot and post rarely. I popped in to agree with Nrdsb4. I enjoy the perspectives of Romani, Ema and Niquii. They are more thoughtful, sincere, and open to alternate opinions than many of the parents who have shown up (and then left) here over the years…

I don’t. To each his own.

Aw shucks, thanks guys. 8->

@sax to send a PM, click on a members screenname or avatar and the member’s profile page will display. Then click “message” and begin typing to send the PM.

I finally tried the mobile version today on my phone and it’s not bad either. The gray login bar bounces alittle slower than i can read, but it’s clean for reading the click links from the e-mails which is about all I do on my phone. I still get too many e-mails 20-100 a day from a couple fast moving threads, so hopefully they can figure out how to alert only one time. My tablet is still not loading, i was curious if it would detect the mobile site or the full web.

so if the previous servers weren’t enough, why not only upgrade the servers? Why make any other changes? Were cosmetic changes necessary to make the server switch? If not, is there data to support that these other changes were needed? Is there data from other sites to support that these other changes will improve the site?

It seems like a lot of changes were made and @doughill said they were necessary, is it too much to ask why the admins felt they were necessary?

Finally tried on my Droid and it’s mostly usable for simple things. Not counting how the Draft Saved banner keeps popping up and blocking my typing. *Every minute /i Like that I can touch move my screen to see or not the header and footer. Ugh, that banner every minute.

Maybe they could change it temporarily to say GO HAWKS!

They changed forum software from vBulletin to VanillaForums. There are a lot of boring technical reasons why VanillaForums is a much better platform - supportability, maintainability, expandability, customization, feature support, performance, cost, integration, blah blah blah.

From what I have read and seen, VanillaForums allows a lot of customization of the look of the forums. So they certainly could have taken the approach of making it look and behave as much like the old forums as possible.

But they clearly chose to do a refresh of the look and feel, and they seem to have come up a bit short, based on the complaints. And a lot of functionality was missing or broken when they rolled it out. We are being used as beta testers, and it is generally a mistake in my experience to let your customers be your QA department. It saves some money in the short term, but it pisses everyone off.

They definitely could have handled the roll-out better. For example, an email saying the forums were changing, and here’s what to do if they don’t work or you can’t log on, would have been appreciated. If you don’t know what a “cookie” is, you may still not be able to access the forums.

Hopefully they will eventually allow us to individually customize certain aspects of the UI, such as font, background color, avatar display, white space, etc.

Not having the mobile apps working at roll-out is ridiculous as well. There’s no way they didn’t know the apps didn’t work, unless they are completely incompetent. I would have loved to be a fly on the wall at the meetings where the marketing/mgmt people shouted down the engineers that they were going live on a certain date, regardless of what worked or didn’t.

Maybe spoke too soon. Draft Saved More “learning curve.”

Draft Saved …every minute. Pretty funny.

Another bug I just noticed - if I enter a reply, and I am not on the last page of the thread, my post shows up at the bottom of the page I am on, instead of jumping me to the end of the thread.

And if I am on the last page, the page doesn’t get refreshed when I post my reply, so if there are other replies that were entered between when I started and when I finished doing my reply, I don’t see them unless I manually refresh.

If you refresh though it orders itself correctly. I noticed that a few days ago and just tested it again. It will stay out of order until you refresh, so i wonder if other people see it out of order?

I don’t see any difference. It still looks white to me. Perhaps your vision is adjusting regrettably to the white background.

True. Lol. But that didn’t stop the launch of Apple Maps, New Coke and a certain prominent website.

Request: Pls. bring back the post number.

Ah, the magic of add-ins.

I am using Adblocker to get rid of the avatars.
I am using Customize Your Web to change the background color to a light grey, and get rid of 30 pixels of white space at the top and bottom of each post, which saves me 60 pixels of screen space per post.

If the posts are small, I can now see about 8 at a time instead of 3.

Now I have to work on the white space on the left and right sides.

@notrichenough any idea if I can change my background on a Macbook? Browsed around for “customize your web” but not finding it. I would do anything to get rid of this white background.
