The issue I have is that these kids were not even reviewed to be admitted or denied. My son reached out to his OSU rep and he was very apologetic and said this is not indicative of how OSU operates. He said it was an error on OSU’s part and to sit tight while they work through the apps; it was a nice response given after my child reached out to him…that was almost a month ago. Many universities are going to have lower admit rates due to Covid type things like lots of kids who took gap years are comin back into this class, over acceptances last year, SAT optional policies, etc…it is a crazy cycle and some schools are handling it much better than others. I’m just surprised that OSU a large well-respected university would be one that isn’t doing a better job.
This is what’s so frustrating. If it was an oversight or error or mistake, why are they forcing this group of deferred applicants to wait until late March to get a decision when RD applicants will get a decision on 2/18??
No school can force you to attend… but you’ll lose your deposit if you don’t enroll.
Wdym? Like it’s non refundable?
I TOTALLY agree–I believe we all went into this thinking EA = knowing your options earlier. Having read up on the EA vs RD, it seems as though EA was still the way to go. While the standards may be a little higher for EA, I think by the time they get to the RD they are looking for standout students. Also, a number of schools tend to put out more EA acceptances than RD acceptances. I’m def watching this as I get to do this all again in 2 years…
U of Georgia specifically said the RD acceptances they send out this week will be the upper echelon of applicants–leaving the deferred sitting in the pile at the end.
OSU… I am so deflated and disappointed, and my student is, too. I appreciate that every student is an individual but I really feel like there is a large pool of deferred students that really got completely shut out. We were given 2 dates (they’re still listed on the website). The fact that NO ONE that didn’t hear by Jan 21st for EA didn’t seem to get rejected, only deferred, tells me they didn’t review the applications. Even if our kids get in for the March date from the EA deferral pool, will there be any merit $$ at that point??
Yes - non-refundable. Otherwise everyone would commit to every school they got accepted to and colleges would have no idea who’s actually gonna show up in the fall.
I agree that it looks like they didn’t even review the apps from this group (the EA applicants who didn’t hear on Jan 21, then were all deferred several days later). My daughter did email her rep last week, letting them know she had sent her mid-year grades. She received a response stating record number of applications, effort not to over-enroll, etc, and said she’d hear in mid-March. Definitely more of a waitlist than a deferral.
So for those who were in the large group that was deferred on Jan 21st. Did you send any additional information into OSU? The email said nothing else was needed but it seems some are sending in additional info.
My daughter has not with OSU, but with other schools where she was deferred she has been emailing and almost all of them have stated that no additional information is required or will be reviewed. She hadn’t emailed OSU because we couldn’t find where our regional AO was - we only could find a generic OSU email address. Maybe we just aren’t finding it on the website?
Thank you so much - she just couldn’t find this one!
I think it’s a really bad look for OSU. My daughter applied late Sept and was in the deferred grouping after Jan 21. OSU is not being upfront with what happened. We found out from our school counselor that anyone deferred is no longer eligible for scholarships, only ones that you spend a ton of time on to get done. So OSU was overwhelmed and did not handle this well, and now we would not even be considered for academic/merit scholarships even if by some chance they get in at the end of March. Agreed it’s very disappointing. Many friends who applied and got deferred have siblings at OSU now. Just not a good look for OSU…
Completely agree. OSU fell to the bottom of DD’s list and likely won’t consider it even if she does get in at this point.
Why even have EA if delayed to last regular??? smh Screws up ability to make decision on 2nd choice, which has housing starting beginning March. We are letting DS make decision and he wants to wait to hear from OSU either way. Harder on us vs him lol
Wonder who will get first opportunity… those on wait list from Dec & Jan or batch of deferred?
Deferred, since they are still under consideration.
This group of kids did not get deferred unit Jan 25- a whole bunch that they obviously did not have time to even look at. The deferral did not ask for anything else to be submitted- because I don’t think they even looked at what they already had…
if this is true- that because they did not get considered for merit because they did not get in under EA- OSU is completely out for us. I don’t care if it is D22’s top choice- we got lots of $$$ from other schools- why pay more for a school that is not even capable of giving admission offers to the best fit candidates that apply.
that makes sense, thanks
I think the difference is that a whole batch of EA applications were not even looked at for OSU and put on deferred list. Posts awhile back on this thread discussed that. . . While UW-Madison had a surge in applications and deferred more than normal, there has been no indication the early apps were simply not reviewed at all (the way OSU was). Every single school seems to have posted an article about “Record numbers of applications this year” it is a rough year to be a senior.
