You were deferred from Harvard and didn’t get any merit award at Ohio State? How is that even possible?

Did he apply by the Nov. 1 deadline for scholarship consideration? My daughter applied TO and by the deadline, so I was very careful to read their statement on test scores and even printed it out for my OSU section of our binder. I don’t know if he could submit scores now, but here is what I printed, which is still on their website.:

  • Applicants will receive full consideration in the admissions process and in review for scholarships, direct enrollment to their college or school, Honors and Scholars Programs, and the Morrill Scholarship Program even if they are unable or choose not to submit a score.

I took it at face value. My daughter did not submit because she did not feel they reflected her ability (which was listed in their previous paragraph as a reason that perhaps some students might want to go TO). She had a weighted GPA of 4.375, honors and APs, and heavy ECs. Haven’t been able to access her letter, but it seems to me that you might have a case to appeal.

I’m really sorry. I know you have been waiting to hear and that this was their first choice. (((hugs)))

Appreciate it. It will all work out somehow. Thank you

I talked to someone again at financial aid….they reiterated again that there are no appeals whatsoever and all offers are final.

So disappointed for your daughter! I do think that the admissions office was completely overwhelmed this year and not handled this year’s applicants with much care - not sure what’s going on with that department - just look at all the students that were deferred with amazing stats for no apparent reason. And the students that got substantial merit right away with less stellar credentials (not taking anything away from those students!) make me think that this OSU department isn’t living up to the reputation of OSU. So I’m not hopeful for my boy.

We’re still planning to call them next week and fill out the appeal form if it ever gets onto the website (says “coming soon!” or something like that). Again, this is telling as to what’s going on in that department.

I’m sure it’s a great school and is still near the top of my S22’s list, but really disappointed in our first experience with OSU. That’s all.

Thank you! We told her if at the end, it’s still her top choice, we would try to figure it out. We are hoping the other comparable who gave her money or are in state like Illinois will move up now. The issue with the appeal form is there is none. Do you see one ? Even her local OSU rep in Chicago said once published, it’s final. Sigh. I hope you are right !

How in the world do students that are accepted into Honors or Scholars NOT get even a dime of merit aid? This doesn’t make any sense to me.

When I called, they just told me those are completely separate departments and it’s never based on that. Dunno. All the other schools she got into honors or was offered honors, she got significant money. Oh well. It is what it is. I guess because they told me almost 70,000 kids applied and only like half got in.

does anyone understand how to read the financial aid? I’m seeing the scholarships/loans but not how much I would actually have to pay for the 2023 school year.

Really eager for tomorrow… hoping to find out about morrill!!
