Twins

Accepted with honors and volunteer scholarship - 4.4 UTK recalc gpa 1440 SAT engineering, state ranked musician

Deferred- 3.9 UTK recalc gpa 1370 SAT History AP scholar with distinction

doing everything for continued interest for the one. I honestly assumed the less competitive major would have the easier time. her mid year GPA will hopefully be 4.6 with four APs and three DE with Pitt so hoping that helps.

Just replying here to say I am getting the impression Haslam was extremely difficult OOS. My son was an ambassador in Haslam and a 2025 grad and he watched it get tougher and tougher while he was there.

That said, if you are going to wait it out remember lots of kids do get in regular decision and the reason Haslam is so popular is that it is really great. Mine had an amazing experience. My dd has UTK as one of her top choices but she is not a business major. If she was she would be going to UTK without a doubt.

Is your admitted kid likely to go? We are visiting campus next month and hoping that helps deferred twin.

Thank you!! This helps make us feel a bit better! It’s hard being deferred when you have the qualifications to receive one of their merit scholarships posted on their website.

I know. And if you do get in you know you are qualified to do amazing there as you are a better student than so many in state admits. I’m all for in state preference (as our surrounding states have it so it is only fair our students get a leg up somehow) but just know you are so well qualified and if you make it in you will do so well and Haslam has so many resources for those that take advantage of them.

Also like 40 kids from my dd’s school have their name on the wall as accepted there and usually like 4 or 5 actually go so lots of movement to be had.

Accepted with Volunteer $18K scholarship.

After a deferral from Clemson, we needed this.

So great to hear your son had a positive experience, especially with Haslam!

My daughter accepted as well, her sister just graduated from Haslam with a finance major in May, so both of them are very excited!

Our daughter was deferred last night then randomly received an email a couple of hours ago about an update to her portal and was accepted!! Has anyone heard of this happening to others?? We were absolutely floored and pinched ourselves to make sure it was real but we’ve confirmed her spot and paid her deposit so it’s official! She was admitted to her first choice major of Advertising in the College of Communication and Information (CCI). Stats: 3.89 UT GPA; 1260 SAT; Captain of dance team; Assistant manager and lifeguard; Loads of volunteer hours; and her bother/our son is a sophomore at UTK.

Hi all. For any of you who have firsthand student experience at UT, question: We’re NC based (coastal, so think as far east as you can go without swimming) and my DD has been (very gratefully!) accepted to Auburn, Clemson, UGA, and UT. She would be an exploratory studies / undecided major at all; I anticipate she’ll end up in communications field with a business minor. She LOVES Auburn, but is starting to get really antsy about how far it feels from home. She really liked Clemson, but the cost is just enough more to make us all pause (even her). She honestly applied to UGA at the last minute, so doesn’t have strong feelings there. We haven’t yet visited TN, but plan to do so the week between Christmas and New Years (I know it’ll be empty, but that’s when we can do it). She has been really interested in UT, as it seems to embody a lot of what she wants (rigorous but not overly-competitive; great community/culture; an exploratory studies program that will help her consider a few different paths). And, in her mind, it’s slightly closer (by driving, it’s about 2 hrs closer than Auburn). She is a fantastic student, but also social. Plans to rush. Really just looking for a good solid college experience.

Any insights from this crowd that may help me guide her? I’d particularly love any “Why we love UT” insights.

If you are part of the Clemson or Auburn threads, you’ll likely see my question there too-

Thank you all!

My D23 has had an exceptional experience at UTK. She’s a Junior in Haslam, finds her classes interesting and professors helpful, is very involved in her sorority and loves the school spirit, weather and the mix of people she’s met from all over. She also received a big merit scholarship which has offset the cost of housing lol! Knoxville is a great town - IMO a big step up from Clemson. UGA was way too big of a campus for my D but Athens is a great town too. UTK also seemed the least “southern” of the southern schools we visited. I suppose that could be a positive or a negative depending on what your kid is looking for. We’re from CO so for her it was a positive.

I am looking for input regarding a UTK visit. I see there is a “New Vol Roll Call” admitted student event in March – but sometimes these events can be overcrowded and a bit chaotic. Anyone have any insight? We were thinking of scheduling just a normal tour/visit in February instead – and would add a Vols basketball game to the itinerary since D is a big sports nut.

My daughter did both and I would recommend the Feb visit with a basketball game instead.

Definitely do the regular visit and ball game if that is an option!

Thank you!

I have a sophomore at Auburn. He has changed his major back and forth between Business and Engineering. Auburn is so flexible and supportive for kids who are trying to figure out their way. We were worried about him being 12 hours away but he called it home by the end of freshman year. My 2026 didn’t feel like there was enough to do in Auburn and loves the size of Knoxville. You can’t go wrong with any of the options IMO!! Congrats & good luck.
