To me it sounds like UTK is trying to raise admission standards and increase seats. I like both of these things! So perhaps we are seeing some growing pains.

I would encourage those concerned about freshman housing to talk to their Admissions Counselor and not put much stock into some of the commentary being posted to this board. A lot of bad information.
The following article from the Knoxville ABC affiliate should debunk some of the more outrageous statements posted here like the one that suggested 5,000 freshman had to live in hotel rooms. The article is dated August, 2023 and includes quotes from the Executive Director of University Housing.

My admitted tour also worked with no issue
My son last year was accepted EA business with a 1200 SAT and 3.8 GPA ( Many AP /Honors classes). A close friend is applying this year and has over 4.0 GPA and was deferred. Crazy how competitive it has gotten. Even crazier there has not been any decisions yet.

My D has 3.99 unweighted and 5.3 weighted. 5 APs. School doesnât have a ton to choose from. Sports, excellent recs from faculty and tons of extra curricular stuff. Deffered. Small boarding school with less than 90 In her graduation class. OOS. Anxiously waiting!

It has been an amazing group here helping everybody get through this in a sane manner. I am depleted of hacks, guesses and other actions. All I will do is wait for whatever decision comes out when it comes out. Good Luck to all kids and their parents. Hang in there!

My awaiting decision disappeared about an hour ago. Maybe today is the day
Iâm just gonna start expecting Friday so I donât get my hopes up. Iâve been so motivated Monday and Tuesday and Iâm demoralized by now so Iâm just gonna expect Friday and be surprised if it comes out sooner

probably updating it, which is a good sign that hopefully they are are finishing up everyoneâs input.

Regarding housing priority, on the tour we went on last year they said they allot the housing lottery in 4 increments - and each increment has 25% of the top spots. So each group lottery has the same chances of getting higher housing priority. Itâs not ranked by when you pay your deposit. As long as you commit by the deadline you have an equal chance of getting a good spot in the housing lottery. They said if youâre rooming with another or a group, whomever has the highest spot in the group will be the spot for the entire group. So basically, donât stress about that! Itâs one thing UTK is doing right - I am frustrated by the other schools my daughter got into who have the housing and enrollment deposits together. I have many friends who are enrolling at multiple schools to get housing priority. We have not done this, but itâs annoying to have to wait and then possibly be at the bottom of the list b/c we did things the right way. I also know based on this, that the housing priority lists will shift at all these schools b/c the kids can only go to one!

â i just spoke with a rep, and some of us wonât get decisions until about a month later with spring decisions theyâre releasing decisions for a lot off
us tomorrow though because they are overwhelmed Theyâre releasing it the last day possible.â
