Our daughter’s UTK Core GPA is actually slightly above her school weighted GPA, but it was due to a choice she made because of the way the UTK core is calculated. She took an extra math class last year to give her 5 math courses by end of Junior year, and UTK only uses the best 4 grades in Math if they are applicable. This effectively removed her only C+ from high school (Honors Geometry freshman year) from the calculation and it was replaced with an A in Statistics. When the UTK core GPA was published in her portal, it was exactly what we expected/hoped it would show (UTK Core 4.14). Unfortunately, her SAT is still just below the middle 50% from the most recently published CDS, so she is still expecting a deferral tonight. Hoping her major choice will help (Audiology and Speech) based on a holistic review, but still a longshot.
Her in-state Penn State acceptance has helped reduce any anxiety about tonight though. I think whe will be perfectly happy if Penn State ends up being her final decision. I am not sure she would even choose UTK over PSU at this point, but Tennessee was always at or near the top of her list.
If you have access to the portal, it is listed in the “GPA and Tests” tab. You have to scroll down past the all the Test Score information, UTK Core GPA is listed below that.
I just saw that on FB as well. They even had a screen shot of the wording as well. Strange. Nothing different yet in my kid’s portal. That same parent also said her son received an email. Maybe they’re rolling out decisions
Curious, do others know if the recalculated UTK core GPA has been there all along or is this a new development? Hoping there wasn’t some missing piece that would have kept a UTK core GPa from being calculated. He did his STARS forever ago.
All you should have in the portal for the GPA is the self reported. That is the recalculated GPA using the UTK formula applied to what you entered into STARS.
The “Calculated UT Core GPA (official GPA)”is what will be official after they get your final transcript.
So don’t worry if you just have one GPA. It is misleading but that’s how it is supposed to be.
